Candidates who wish to apply for Civil Services Exam need to fulfill at least one of the following educational qualifications:
 Any degree (graduation) from:
(1) Any of the Universities incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India. or
(2) Other educational institutions established by an Act of Parliament. or
(3) Declared to be deemed as a University Under Section-3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956. or
(4) Possess an equivalent qualification.
 
Note: Aspirant who has appeared or intends to appear for the qualifying examination and is awaiting results (Final year students can also apply) are also eligible to appear for the Preliminary Examination

Minimum age for Civil Services Exam

For Civil Services Exam a candidate must have attained the age of 21 years.

Maximum age for Civil Services Exam

Upper age limit for:

1. General category: 32 years
2. Other Backward Castes (OBC): 35 years
3. Scheduled Caste / Scheduled Tribe (ST) / (SC) : 37 Years
4. Physically disabled (Blind, Deaf-mute, Orthopedic): 42 years
5. Citizens of Jammu and Kashmir*: 37 years
6. Disabled serviceman discharged from duty**: 35 years
7. Ex-servicemen*** : 37 years

 Age Relaxation in Civil Services IAS Exam

* Citizens of Jammu and Kashmir

• General = 37 Years (32+5 relaxation of 5 Years)
• OBC = 40 Years (32+5+3 relaxation of 8 Years)
• SC/ST = 42 Years (32+5+5 relaxation of 10 Years)
• PH = 50 years (32+5+10 relaxation of 15 Years)

** Disabled serviceman discharged from duty

• General = 35 years
• OBC = 38 Years (32+3+3 relaxation of 6 Years)
• SC/ST = 40 Years (32+3+5 relaxation of 8 Years)

*** Ex-servicemen including Commissioned Officers and ECOs/SSCOs
who have rendered at least five years Military Service
Ex-serviceman with five years duty

• General = 37 years (32+5 relaxation of 5 Years)
• OBC = 40 Years (32+5+3 relaxation of 8 Years)
• SC/ST = 42 Years (32+5+5 relaxation of 10 Years)
