The International Earth Science Olympiad – IESO, was established as one of the major exercises of the International Geoscience Education Organization– IGEO.
IGEO is partnered to and sponsored by IUGS (International Union of Geological Sciences). The aims of IGEO are to promote Geoscience education at all worldwide/international levels, to encourage and develop the public awareness of Geoscience, particularly among young people and to work on the change of the quality of Geoscience education all over the world.
The IESO is an annual competition for secondary school students (Age of students not more than 18 years old on July the first of the year of the Olympiad). The students have to test their skills in every single significant zone of geophysics, meteorology, oceanography, earth sciences, including geology, terrestrial astronomy and environmental sciences. The theoretical examination includes problems which are supposed to measure the student’s knowledge and understanding of Earth science areas.
The Earth Science Olympiad Programme will follow a four-stage procedure
- First is National Level Entrance Test (ET).
- Second is Training Camp and the Indian National Earth Science Olympiad (INESO).
- The third is Pre-Departure Training Camp. and
- Forth is Participation in the International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO).
For the first stage Entrance Test, a humble fee of Rs. 50/- will be charged and no TA/DA gave. Free boarding, accommodation and travelling remittance as per norms will be provided to students selected for the Training Camp. No fee would be charged for ensuing stages. The expenditure including international travel of official Indian groups and related expenses like travel insurance and visa charge will be borne through budgetary provisions passed by the Earth Science Olympiad Cell. Local hospitality will be given by the host country of the International Earth Science Olympiad. All financial related help specified above is subject to the approval of budgetary provisions by the Government of India.
