Chartered Accountant (CA Course Detail

The Chartered Accountant Course is a correspondence type professional course. The Chartered Accountant Course and CA Profession in India is regulated by The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), New Delhi. Any Student who has passed 10th Standard or equivalent Exam which is conducted by an examining body who is recognised by the central Government, State Government is eligible to Register for the CA Course and has to Register for Chartered Accountant Course / CA-CPT Course.

The Chartered Accountant Course / CA Course is divided into following stages. You have to pass every stage to step on next stage.
  • Common Proficiency Test (CPT).
  • Integrated Professional Competence Course (IPCC)/IPCE.
  • 3 years Articleship/ Training under a Practicing CA.
  • C. A. Final.

How to Enter into CA Course

  • Start CA Course through CPT.
  • Enter into CA Course through Direct Entry.

Through CPT

  • Enroll with the ICAI Institute for Common Proficiency Course (CPC) after passing class 10th examination.
  • Appear in CPT examination after appearing in the Senior Secondary Examination (10+2 examination).

Through Direct Who are eligible ?

  • Commerce Graduates/Post-Graduates (55%) or Other Graduates/Post-Graduates (60%).
  • Candidates who have passed an Intermediate level examination of ICSI or ICWAI.

About CPT Exam (Common Proficiency Test)

This is the entrance exam for Chartered Accountant Course / CA Course.

  • CPT Examination is the first stage for CA Exam.
  • CPT Examination is now conducted 2 times a year: (1) June and (2) December.
  • This exam contains 4 Papers: Accounting, Mercantile Laws, General Economics and Quantitative Aptitude.
  • CPT Examination is objective type examination.
  • It is divided into 2 sessions of 2 hours each on the same day.
  • Negative marking of 0.25 Marks for every incorrect answer in CPT Exam.
  • CA Course  CPT Exam Passing Criteria – Obtains at one sitting a minimum of 30% marks in each section and a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate of all the sections.

    Eligibility Criteria for Chartered Accountant Course – CPT Exam 

    Candidates applying for Chartered Accountant Course CPT Exam need to fulfill following Eligibility Criteria for Chartered Accountant Course CPT Exam:

    • Candidates should be passed or showing up in 10+2 level qualifying examination from any national or state recognised/perceived Board of Secondary Education in India.
    • Candidates need to be registered for/switched over to CPT Exam with Board of Studies of The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI).
    • The registration for CA CPT Examination is valid just for 3 years, candidates who are already registered/enrolled need to re-validate from concerned Regional Office before their registration expires/lapses before 3 years.

    Exemption from CA Course – CPT Exam 

    • Candidates who have completed/finished graduation or post-graduation in Commerce stream with at least 55% marks in total of all subjects or its equivalent from a state or nationally recognised university.
    • Candidates qualifying undergraduate or postgraduate degree from Open University are additionally exempted from appearing in CA CPT Examination.
    • Candidates holding UG/PG degree in whatever another stream than Commerce must have obtained at least 60% marks or equivalent grade from recognised University (including Open University) require not appear/show up in CA CPT Examination.

  • Note: Candidates whose eligibility is doubted/questioned will be asked to provide documents fulfilling eligibility requirements at least 14 days before the conduct of the examination.

    CPT Examination Pattern

The CA CPT Examination is conduct in 2 sessions 

  • Session I : Total marks – 100, Total Time – 2 hours
  • Session II : Total marks – 100, Total Time – 2 hours
Session I : Morning Session : 10.30 AM to 12.30 PM. Session II : Afternoon Session : 02.00 PM to 04.00 PM. In Session I, there are 2 sections :
  • Section : A – Fundamentals of Accounting with 60 marks.
  • Section : B – Mercantile Laws with 40 marks.
In Session II, there are 2 sections :
  • Section : C – General Economics with 50 marks
  • Section : D – Quantitative Aptitude (Maths) with 50 marks.
Note :
  • Total Marks : 200.
  • Paper Type : Objective – Multiple choice questions
  • Language of paper : English / Hindi
Marking : There will be negative marking for incorrect answer. 25% marks will be deduced for incorrect answer.

Number of Attempt for CPT Examination

  • Initial registration for Chartered Accountant Course CPT Exam is valid for 3 years.
  • That means 6 attempts. (Yearly two)
  • After 3 years you should revalidate it for an additional 3 years.
  • Fee for revalidation is Rs. 300/- for each revalidation.
  • Each Revalidation shall be valid for 3 years.
